A sample legal agreement between a performing arts organisation and a Playwright / Writer for a theatre production.

Performing Arts Organization: [Organization Name]
Playwright: [Playwright Name]

This contract (“Agreement”) is made and entered into on the date of acceptance by the playwright, and is by and between [Organization Name] (“Producer”), and [Playwright Name] (“Playwright”).

1. Engagement:
Producer hereby engages playwright to write the theatre production of [Production Name] (“Production”). Playwright shall be responsible for all writing aspects of the Production, including but not limited to the script, character development, and storyline.
2. Deliverables:
Playwright shall be responsible for the following deliverables:
- Submit a complete and final script of the Production to Producer by [Script Submission Date]
- Attend all script development meetings as scheduled by Producer
- Maintain the confidentiality of all information and materials related to the Production
- Adhere to professional standards of conduct and behavior at all times

Producer shall be responsible for the following deliverables:

- Provide playwright with the necessary guidelines and production plans
- Provide playwright with a schedule of script development meetings in advance
- Pay playwright the agreed upon compensation in a timely manner
1. Timeline:
The term of this Agreement shall commence on [Start Date] and shall continue until [End Date] or completion of the run of the Production, whichever occurs first. Script development meetings shall take place from [Script Development Start Date] to [Script Development End Date]. Performances shall take place from [Performance Start Date] to [Performance End Date].
2. Compensation:
In consideration for the services to be rendered by playwright hereunder, Producer shall pay playwright the sum of [Compensation Amount] upon submission of the final script. Playwright shall also be entitled to a share of the net profits of the Production, as determined by Producer in its sole discretion.
3. Termination:
This Agreement may be terminated by either party at any time, for any reason, upon written notice to the other party. In the event of termination by Producer, playwright shall be entitled to receive compensation for all services rendered up to the date of termination.
4. Confidentiality:
Playwright shall maintain the confidentiality of all information and materials related to the Production, including but not limited to the script, character descriptions, and production plans. playwright shall not disclose any such information to any third party without the prior written consent of Producer.
5. Indemnification:
Playwright shall indemnify and hold harmless Producer, its affiliates, and their respective officers, directors, employees, and agents, from any and all claims, damages, or expenses arising out of or in connection with playwright’s performance of services under this Agreement.
6. Governing Law:
This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of [State].
